Description

Our Indian whole black peppercorns are the top grade of Indian pepper. Our peppercorns are graded “Tellicherry Garbled Extra Bold” or TGEB – meaning they are of an exceptional pepper grading. Offering some of the most pungent and punchy tones with an undisputed depth of flavour, our TGEB peppers are truly a cut above the rest and widely regarded as one of the highest quality black peppers in the world.
We can date the use of Black Pepper as far back as 4000 BCE, with Pepper being placed in Egyptian tombs alongside Pharaohs. To further add to the historical value of Pepper, in 410 CE, when the Visigoths sacked Rome, they demanded the payment of 3,000 pounds of pepper to lift the siege. Black Pepper, for most of our history, has been worth more than its weight in gold. Even as late as the 15th century, Pepper would cost around £350 per pound. Had it not been for the demand for black pepper in the Middle Ages, Venetian sailors would have taken much longer to find an Eastern sea route!

Black pepper, a spice of South Indian descent, is present in almost every cuisine on the planet. Owing to the extremely broad cultivation of peppercorns across most tropical climates, there are multitudes of pepper varieties. Much like grapes, various factors affect the taste, smell and appearance of pepper. Tellicherry peppers are widely regarded as the “Wagyu of Pepper”, above the more common Indian variants such as Malabar or Kerala. For Tellicherry peppers specifically, there are 3 grades, with a further 8 variants each with their own levels of grading.
Used extensively around the world as a way of enhancing the flavour of a dish, there are also a multitude of health benefits to Black Pepper. The essential oil (known as black pepper oil) is commonly added to massage blends, relieving aching joints and painful muscles. Black Pepper is also documented to be a major part of the digestion and metabolism of food, helping to settle the stomach and relieve gas. It’s high in Vitamin A and C, with a very high caffeine content.

Our black pepper is packaged in bags.
