Description

Natively grown all over the world, Coriander seeds have found their way into the cuisines of Latin-America, Asia and South Africa. The seeds are made from the dried fruit of the plant, and have a pleasant warm, citrus aroma with a slight spice – totally different to fresh coriander leaves!

In their whole form, the seeds are commonly used for brewing certain styles of beer (particularly European styles) along with orange peel to impart a citrus flavour. Coriander seeds are also one of the key botanicals in flavouring Gin! The whole seeds can also be used for pickling and brining to add a citrusy, spicy element. Ground, the spice is usually used in curries and baked goods – after being toasted and ground to soften the spice up. Ground coriander is a spice in Garam Masala used in generous quantities alongside cumin and other regional spices.

Many food historians regard Coriander as one of the oldest herbs and spices on record – with Coriander Seeds specifically being found in ruins that date back as far as 5000 BCE! Despite originally being native to the Middle East and Southern Europe, the extensive use of Coriander in China has led to Coriander being called “Chinese Parsley” in many parts of the world. Coriander Seeds were also found in the tomb of Tutankhamen (around half a kilo!) which suggests that even the ancient Egyptians cultivated the plant.
Coriander has an array of surprising health benefits too – from lowering blood sugar to helping protect your skin from ageing! By activating certain enzymes within the body, coriander seed is so effective at lowering blood sugar that those with Diabetes should be careful when using it. There is also research to suggest that coriander extracts act as a diuretic, helping to flush excess sodium and water from your body helping to lower blood pressure.

Our Coriander seed is obtained from country and comes packaged whole in 25kg bags (Ground version available on request).
